Brussels, Retailers must be enabled to play a central role in Europe’s circular economy — especially in the collection and repair of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). That was the clear message from the Consumer Electronics Retail Day, organised by EuroCommerce and the EuCER Council.
As the European Commission prepares the Circular Economy Act and a revision of the WEEE Directive, both policymakers and industry leaders stressed the importance of creating a policy framework that supports practical, retail-driven solutions. Retailers are at the front line of consumer interaction and product returns. With the right conditions — including fair cost-sharing, access to spare parts, and financial support — they can act as local repair hubs and drive up WEEE collection rates.
Speakers including Christel Delberghe (EuroCommerce), Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea (European Commission), Hans Carpels (Euronics), and Pascal Leroy (WEEE Forum) called for harmonised rules, improved infrastructure, and greater public awareness to help make circular electronics a reality.
Retail and wholesale can be a strong ally for the EU in achieving its climate and circularity ambitions. Our sector is present in every community and holds a unique position in the value chain between suppliers and consumers. With the right regulatory and legal conditions in place, we can play a major role in deploying circular business models — especially in the repair and reuse of products.
